For many students, literacy challenges do not begin at the sentence or paragraph level. They begin much earlier, at the sound level. When foundational speech and language skills are fragile, reading and writing often become an uphill climb rather than a natural progression.
This SLP Summit session, From Sounds to Sentences, focuses on the critical connection between speech sound development, language skills, and literacy outcomes. Designed for Speech-Language Pathologists working in educational settings, this presentation highlights how intentional, structured support can bridge the gap between speech production and meaningful written expression.

Speech-language pathologists play a vital role in literacy development, even when reading and writing are not explicitly listed as primary goals. Difficulties with phonological awareness, speech sound production, and expressive language can significantly impact decoding, spelling, and sentence formulation.
This session reinforces the idea that literacy is not a separate skill set but a continuation of oral language development. When students struggle with sounds, patterns, and structure in spoken language, those challenges often carry over into written language.
Rather than jumping straight to writing tasks, this presentation emphasizes the importance of developing strong foundational skills first. Participants explore how speech sound awareness, sound-symbol relationships, and oral sentence structure contribute to literacy success.
The session walks through practical ways to:
Strengthen phonological and phonemic awareness
Support accurate sound production within meaningful contexts
Build sentence-level language skills that translate to writing
Connect oral language practice directly to literacy tasks
By aligning speech and language intervention with classroom literacy expectations, SLPs can support students more effectively and collaboratively.
A key strength of this presentation is its focus on realistic, school-based application. Strategies shared throughout the session are designed to fit into existing therapy sessions without requiring separate literacy blocks or extensive additional materials.
Participants are encouraged to think flexibly about how speech goals can be addressed through sentence formulation, narrative tasks, and early writing activities, ensuring that therapy remains functional and relevant.
When intervention targets the connection between sounds and sentences, students gain tools that extend beyond speech clarity. They develop skills that support reading comprehension, written expression, and academic participation.
By the end of the session, attendees walk away with a clearer understanding of how to:
Integrate literacy support into speech and language therapy
Align goals across speech, language, and academic domains
Support students who struggle with both communication and literacy
This session serves as a reminder that when SLPs intentionally connect sounds to sentences, they help students build pathways not only to clearer speech, but to confident communication and literacy success.
